Science exploration: Crystals

Daniel brought a rock (called a geode) with crystals inside it to school in the first week of school. We were interested in the crystals, and talked about what we knew about them. Some people knew that some crystals are made in volcanoes. Jenny showed us a picture on the internet of some really big crystals that are in a famous place called the Giant’s Causeway in Ireland, which came from lava from a volcano.

The next day, Levi brought in some crystals that he had made at home from sugar. The crystals had formed on a stick. He told us how he had grown the crystals with his mum. We decided to make some ourselves.

First, we mixed sugar and water together. We needed twice as much sugar as water, so we had two cups of sugar for each cup of water. We all had a turn mixing.

Then, Jenny and Tomo heated the water and sugar on a stove. We all took turns mixing, but we had to be careful because the mixture was hot. When we couldn’t see the sugar anymore, it had been dissolved. The mixture is called a “sugar solution.”

Once the sugar solution had cooled, Jenny poured it into containers, and we put iceblock sticks into the solution, so that the crystals could grow on them. We put them on the windowsill in our classroom and left them without touching them for a few days.

After two days, when we looked at them again (observed them), we saw that there were some crystals forming on the top of the solution, and some on the sticks!
