Matariki in Akomanga 15
Room 15 have been celebrating Matariki all week long! We are so lucky to have Megan come in and join our Matariki celebration by helping us make rewena bread, a traditional Māori sourdough bread. It is usually made from potatoes, but our one is special because its made out of kūmara!
Each day, we had to add a tablespoon of our 'bread bug' into our rewena mixture. We did this for a whole week!
Here we are talking about the science behind rewena bread. Why do you think we had to feed it everyday? Why do we have to leave it for a week before we can cook it? Why do we have to knead the dough? We had to think like scientists for this.
We all got a turn to knead the dough! It had to be kneaded for 10 minutes.
We have to let our dough 'proof' before we can cook it. The longer we leave it, the better it will taste.
Challenge: Can you find what 'proof' means in the dictionary? Add a comment of what it means!
In the afternoon, we went over to the hall and prepared our hua whenua (vegetables) for our soup.
The best part - we got to eat our delicious vegetable soup and rewena bread! Tino reka tēnei kai!
Mānawatia a Matariki
Happy Matariki
